How Clary Sage Changed My Life

May 26, 2017

Ok. If you know me IRL, you'll know that I am always scpritzing myself, spraying others with my hormone balance blend, making yoga mat sprays, etc. However, one of the main causes of this incessant need to spray is partially the result of my love affair with clary sage.

For those of you who have never smelled Clary Sage, it is a quite herbaceous, earthy and rich scent that has many amazing qualities.

The first time I smelled Clary Sage, I was hooked. I have had a history of irregular periods, exhausting mood swings, chaotic PMS symptoms, and just an awful time with my hormone/endocrine system.

When I got my first Young Living Essential Oil 15ml bottle of Clary Sage, I carried it around with me for weeks before masterminding a way of making it a part of my daily life. I started concocting and promoting Platinum Hormone Balancing mist and now I pretty much bring it with me everywhere.

I love spraying this mist over my yoga students when they are relaxing in child’s pose or in corpse pose. I find it does so much more than affect the sense of smell. I often feel softness in the knees when I take a big whiff. Nonetheless, it does things to my state of mind and makes my life easier.

I am not a doctor, but this has been my experience with Clary Sage. There definitely should be some caution with using it, and it should not really be used with children, or while pregnant. However, here are some of the main qualities of this intoxicating oil.

The Basics:

Clary sage essential oil (EO) is extracted from the herb Salvia sclarea, which originated in Southern France, Italy and Syria, but today, its cultivated worldwide. Clary Sage EO provides outstanding benefits for your eyes, nervous system, digestion, endocrine system, skin, and kidneys.

Calming:

It has been known to calm the nervous system during times of stress, depression and insomnia. It can help reduce blood pressure by relaxing the arteries, and may help decrease your risk of heart problems.

Due to its esters, it can help relax muscular spasms and pains that may arise from stress and nervous tension. Thus, it can help relieve headaches, back pain, muscle stiffness and cramps.

Hormonal:

Clary Sage EO can be particularly helpful for women because of its hormone-like components. It can also help tackle menstrual issues (cramps and hot flashes), promote relaxation during childbirth and ease menopause symptoms. In Europe, clary sage oil is employed to help ease menopausal discomfort, menstrual pain and regulate menstrual cycles.

Skin & Hair:

Clary sage oil can help regulate oil production and reduce inflammation that contributes to dermatitis.

Clary sage is believed to help stimulate hair growth. The essential oil can also help in limiting the sebum produced in scalp and aid in treating dandruff.

Disinfectant:

Oil of clary sage can be used to potentially cleanse wounds and may help protect the body during surgery and against other infections.

Clary sage oil is often used to help improve vision and address related conditions. If your eyes are feeling tired from too much screen time, try taking a clean face cloth under warm water, put a drop or two of Clary Sage EO on the cloth and run under warm water again, to disperse it the EO. Lay the cloth over  closed eyes for a few moments. (Be careful not to get Clary sage in your eyes, though! Rinse eyes out immediately if you do, and seek help.) Leave eyes covered for 5 – 10 minutes, and relax while the Clary sage aromas make their impact.

Precautions:

As mentioned above, you do not want to get Clary sage in your eyes. Also, it is said that due to Clary Sage’s estrogenic quality, it may have a negative impact on people who need to regulate their estrogen levels. It is important for people with estrogen-induced conditions avoid using it and ask professional health advice. Also, while clary sage may have a positive effect on childbirth, it should be avoided during pregnancy because it stimulates menstrual flow.Infants and young children should also be kept away from most essential oils due to its potentially harmful effect to their sensitive skin. I also read that it isn't good to smell it while intoxicated. However, I have done so, and I am still here to talk about it.
